Strychnine Use for Richardson’s Ground Squirrel Control
Richardson’s ground squirrels (gophers) continue to pose challenges for agricultural producers across the region, causing damage to crops, forage, and infrastructure. To support effective pest management, limited quantities of 2% liquid strychnine will be made available under regulated conditions.
Mandatory stewardship training
All agricultural producers wishing to access 2% liquid strychnine are required to complete the mandatory Stewardship Training prior to registration. This training ensures proper handling, application, and environmental stewardship.
Registration process and deadline
After completing the training, producers must register with the Municipal District of Taber to be placed on a waiting list:
- Registration deadline: May 22, 2026
- Quantities will be limited
- Distribution will be managed to ensure fair and equitable access for producers in need
Product availability
The Municipal District anticipates receiving 2% liquid strychnine in late May or early June 2026. Registered applicants will be contacted with further details once the product becomes available.
Pricing
Please be advised that the cost of 2% liquid strychnine is expected to be higher than in previous years. Final pricing will be communicated once confirmed.
