Responsible Dog Ownership

Being a responsible dog owner means caring for your pet, keeping them under control, and ensuring they do not harm or disturb others. Under the MD of Taber’s Responsible Dog Ownership Bylaw No. 1998, a “nuisance dog” is one that:

  • Leaves or spreads dog waste in public or private areas.
  • Bites, chases, or alarms people, animals, bicycles, or vehicles.
  • Damages property or upsets garbage containers.
  • Barks or howls excessively, disturbing nearby residents.

Dogs must be properly leashed (no longer than 3 metres) when off their owner’s property and must not create a nuisance in public or private spaces.

Licensing your dog is one of the simplest ways to demonstrate responsible ownership. The MD of Taber’s voluntary Dog Licensing Program helps ensure lost pets are quickly reunited with their families.

Key details about the program:

  • Free registration — no cost for tags, and licenses do not expire.
  • Available for dogs three months of age and older.
  • Register in person at the MD of Taber Administration Office (4900B – 50 Street, Taber).
  • Lost dogs are taken to the Taber Lost Paws Society; owners can call 403‑223‑4784 to report a lost or found dog.

By licensing your dog and practicing responsible ownership, you help keep our communities safe, respectful, and pet‑friendly.

Dogs are considered “at large” when not under the care and control of their owner. If your dog is found at large and impounded:

  • If wearing a license tag, Enforcement Services will issue notice to the owner (in person or by mail).
  • The dog may be reclaimed upon payment of impound fees and penalties:
    • Impound fee: $45
    • Boarding: $35 per day
    • Veterinary costs: As invoiced by the veterinarian
    • Penalty for nuisance/offence:
      • 1st offence – $100
      • 2nd offence – $250
      • 3rd offence – $500
  • Payments are made at the Administration Office, and proof of payment must be shown to the Enforcement Officer before the dog is released.
  • Dogs without identification will be advertised through MD of Taber and social media for five (5) business days. After that, unclaimed dogs become the property of the Taber Lost Paws Society for adoption.
